In Appreciation

The Social Action Office wishes to thank the Catholic Bishops and the Australian Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes for the stand they took on the Tampa crisis and on refugee issues generally. While many Australian Catholics chose to support the Howard Government and the Opposition in their "fortress Australia" policies, it was inspiring to see moral leadership exercised on this issue. The complexity of the issue is acknowledged but that makes the position taken all the more significant.
