On
22 April 2002 we celebrate Earth
Day. It gives us an opportunity to stop and take
stock of the state of our home, the Earth. As well, April 22
is World Day for Water,
so we are reminded doubly about our care for the Earth and
its resources. SBS has been showing a new six-part documentary
series, begun on March 17, on Water: the Drop of Life.
On the SBS
website the series is introduced in the following way: "The
dawn of the 21st century has seen humanity enter an unprecedented
era of challenge - facing the scarcity of fresh drinking water.
Experts believe protecting and allocating safe, fresh water
is the major challenge for this century. For millions of people
worldwide, the well is literally running dry. Today, more than
a billion people have to walk over a kilometre every day for
their drinking water. Eighty percent of all diseases result
directly from drinking water and many believe future wars will
be fought over fresh water." The series is based on a
book of the same name written by Peter Swanson which is available
at Dymocks. SAO will investigate the possibility of purchasing
the video when/if it becomes available.
The Module on Catholic
Social Teaching and the Environment is
completed and after the enthusiasm shown by the ICSAG
meeting on Thursday 14 March, we have made further copies
that will be available for borrowing. Please contact
Pauline if
you are interested in using/promoting this resource or
if you wish the Office staff to conduct a workshop for
you.
As the World
Summit on Sustainable Development is getting
closer it is important that pressure is brought to bear
on the Australian Government to work independently of the
USA and to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. You will find information
and action about this on the Action
Alert page and on the Eco-justice
page of the SAO website. It is urgent that as many
of us as possible are active towards a satisfactory outcome.
