Common
Wealth for the Common Good
Ten Years Down the Track
To
celebrate and reflect upon the decade that has passed since
the release of Common
Wealth for the Common Good, the Social Justice
Statement in 1992, the SAO has taken the following initiatives:
- a short
article has been written posing the question of whether this document
has stood the test of time;
- a theological
reflection has been prepared for use in parishes and communities.
The SAO is also sponsoring
with the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (Archdiocese
of Brisbane) a public address on 17 October which will take
up from where the statement left off ten years ago.
The notion of 'the
common good' is central to Catholic Social Teaching and should
be a distinguishing feature of contemporary Catholic identity,
being lived out and expressed in the individual and corporate
lives of Catholics. This anniversary of the 1992 Bishops' Statement
provides an opportunity to stop, reflect and re-gather a commitment
to this principle.
